Frequently Asked Questions
How old does my child have to be to begin Barton?
Students must be 5 years or older to begin Barton. If you have a younger child, we are happy to get them started with Foundations in Sound to prepare them for Barton.
What is Foundations in Sound?
Foundations in Sound is a “pre-Barton” program that we use if a student is unable to pass the entire Barton Screening Assessment. As written on their website, “Foundation in Sounds™ is designed for parents, tutors, teachers, and other professionals who want to use the Barton Reading & Spelling System, but their students could not pass Part C of the Barton Screening.
Foundation in Sounds™ is an easy-to-use program for students of all ages that will improve a student's auditory discrimination, auditory memory size, and auditory sequencing skills.
When a student has finished all 12 lessons in Foundation in Sounds™, the student will be able to pass Part C of the Barton Student Screening.”
How many levels are in the Barton Reading & Spelling program?
There are 10 levels in the Barton Reading & Spelling program. Each level builds upon the next, strongly emphasizing a reading and spelling sequence (most reading programs emphasize the reading sequence primarily; however, it is agreed that dyslexics need both).
Level 1: Phonemic Awareness
Level 2: Consonants and Short Vowels
Level 3: Closed and Unit Syllables
Level 4: Syllable Division and Vowel Teams
Level 5: Prefixes and Suffixes
Level 6: Six Reasons for Silent-E
Level 7: Vowel-R Syllables
Level 8: Advanced Vowel Teams
Level 9: Influences of Foreign Language
Level 10: Greek Words and Latin Roots
Where can I learn more about the Barton Reading & Spelling program?
We are always happy to share information about the Barton program and how it can serve your child, whether through email or phone call. If you’d like to read more, you can also visit our resources page.
How long does reading & spelling remediation take?
The answer varies for each student. Factors such as their age when they begin remediation, the severity of their dyslexia (if they are dyslexic), how many sessions they complete per week, and more, could mean that it takes longer to strengthen the neural pathways and bridge literacy gaps. Typically, students work with us for 2-4 years to complete the program.
What happens if I refer a friend to SRS?
As a thank-you for your referral, once a new family signs up, both families will receive one additional session free of charge.
Do you offer any reduced rates?
At this time, we offer reduced rates due to the impact Covid-19 has had on our families. Please see our services for more information.
